Rozanne Charlotte Fine Art

About me

My name is Rozanne, I am a part time artist, 35 years old and live in the Netherlands. Drawing and painting was always my passion, even as a child. I wanted to become a children’s book illustrator, because I loved how these large picture books took me into a magical, colorful world.

After finishing highschool I was accepted into art school and moved to Groningen. I left after 6 months because it was much more conceptual and not at all teaching me the classical techniques that I was hoping for. I went on to pursue an academic career in the field of energy planning and did not touch a brush or pencil for the next 13 years. In the summer of 2020 I saw some videos of an artist working in soft pastel (I can’t remember who or where, but thank you anonymous artist!). I remembered that I always wanted to try soft pastes and I even had a small set of unused Pitt pastel pencils. I went to the local art store, bought some soft pastels and Clairfontaine pastelmat, and my love for soft pastels was born.

Over the course of the next year I watched many Youtube videos and practiced a lot. By the end of 2020, I had gotten into the habit of drawing and painting almost daily. I don’t think a week has gone by without me painting or drawing since. My main sources of inspiration were Emma Colbert and Karen Margulis. Both these artists have very different styles but I love how they use color. And color is just something that has always spoken to me. There is pure joy in holding these little sticks of pigment and binder in your hands, and how close you are to your work. Your hands are literally your brushes and you can use them in so many ways to maneuver that pigment to where you want it to be.

In 2023 I travelled a lot for work and decided to bring some watercolors because they are much easier to travel with than pastel. I got more serious about my watercolor practice and at the beginning of 2024 I decided to take some watercolor classes. I have always found watercolors to be much more difficult than pastels, but extremely satisfying and beautiful to watch. Especially when working in a much looser style. The pigment and water can do such beautiful things if you just let them. In many ways watercolors also help me let go of my perfectionism a bit, because quite often it will look better if you just gently coax and let it do it’s thing. I love learning about pigment properties, the different types of effects you can achieve, and what certain colors will do when you mix them together. And because my watercolors take less time it also helps me to practice my freehand drawing skills.

Right now I mainly work in soft pastel (including pastel pencil) and watercolor. I occasionally use some colored pencils. This website shows my work and on my blog I hope to give tips and inspire others who also love to work in these mediums. Let’s see what the future will bring. In the fall of 2024 I will take a course in classical oil painting techniques, so the pages of my portfolio might expand even further in the future!
